Budtender Stories: The Memories of Old School Weed
By Guest Writer Canna Guy
Over the years since I first started using cannabis, there’s some old school weed that are so memorable, that even 30 years later, people are still talking about and looking for them in the wild.
Some strains of cannabis that have passed through my hands (and lungs) since my cannabis journey started, around 1980, have been very difficult to find, even in today’s abundant market.
So, for the record, this is my journey down memory lane to inform you about a few legendary and rare strains you should keep a look out for.
OLD SCHOOL WEED! THE MOST POPULAR
Back in the day, this was the one that we all avoided. It was practically impossible to get high from and was known as “No Stone” weed. Nowadays, I would assume this was sativa hemp flower. It was a nice light green color with skinny leaves, a little sticky and a lot of red hairs. It would usually show up during the end of the summer when cannabis would be difficult to obtain. I would get a half ounce at one time and remember how strange it seemed to smoke. It tasted nice, not harsh, but the only effect it would have was slight relief from nausea. No buzz, no high, nothing else. I actually ended up setting it aside and smoking it when I had nausea.
“Panama Red” was something I’ve only scored a couple times in the 80’s . An interesting flower that looked like a cross between brown weed and purple weed. It was definitely an indica. The smoke was strong, a little harsh and very calming. This one would create couch lock with its heavy sedating effects.
“Hawaiian” was usually super light green with almost yellow flowers, pink pistils, red sticky resin and crystals. I don’t know if what we were buying at that time was actually grown in Hawaii, but we called it Hawaiian and it only turned up maybe once a year, usually in the summer.
This was the supreme energy weed. Take a puff or two and next thing you know you were cleaning house, doing dishes, or running errands. It was perfect for sexy time with your partner!
I have since found that certain strains of Blue Dream are very similar.
MORE OLD SCHOOL WEED! THE RAREST
Concentrates have also been around for a long time. There are several types of hash that were legendary and deserve to be recognized by today’s cannabis connoisseurs. “Black Hash”, usually from Afghanistan, was the occasional treat that would show up a couple times a year. It was not as rare as the other types of cannabis available at the time, but it was super high quality and usually cost up to $25 per gram, in the 90’s.
The most elusive of all was “Snow Bud”. To this day, I still search for this strain and have only obtained it on a very rare occasion over the last 35 years. In fact, I have scored it only 3 times in my life, but this one really lives up to the hype! This strain involved a lot of extra attention by the grower. That’s why if you find it, it’s usually sold for a higher than usual premium price. It truly looks like snow, the crystals are so thick it that the bud is white with sparse pink and red pistils. Snow Bud is euphoric, psychedelic and energizing, but somehow also calming. No freak outs with this strain! If you ever see this strain, BUY IT!! You won’t be sorry!
It’s always fun going down memory lane and remembering all my favorites of old school weed.
